Originally accessible only by water, Portofino was an important military base of the Holy Roman Empire. The Roman historian Pliny named it Portofino, port of dolphins, for the large number of pods that took refuge in the inlet. Protected by long-reaching rocky arms, Portofino has a strategic view of the sea and approaching vessels.
